Things that fly, crawl, and tremble

Location
Tiny Gallery × Van Vleck House & Gardens, Montclair NJ

Things that fly, crawl, and tremble—creatures with feathers, arms, legs, strange eyes, carapaces, and tails—capture Jennifer Place’s imagination. They appear in her dreams and follow her into waking life, where she brings them into being using found objects, metal, and glass.

Place has spent her life learning: glassblowing, torch work, and casting; metal soldering and welding, and just as much time gathering and hoarding materials. Ideas come and go, but once an image takes hold, she gives it form.

For this exhibition, Place turns her attention to the ground beneath us, taking a microscopic look at the bugs that live there and invites us to see them up close, in all their strangeness and detail.

Jennifer Place combines cast, hand-blown and flame-worked glass, mixed-media materials, especially metals, and drawing in artwork that includes sculpture, prints, and works on paper.

Her work has been shown in galleries and shows in the tristate area and Canada, including City Without Walls in Newark, Studio Montclair, and the Hoboken Historical Museum.
